Change is hard. Whether it’s a shift in your job, a new technology to master, or navigating the ripple effects of global events, change can feel like an unexpected wave crashing over you. Lately, it seems like those waves just keep coming—economic uncertainty, the rise of AI, global health challenges, and political shifts that impact how we work and live. It’s a lot. So, how do we keep our heads above water?
Navigating Change Through the Stages of Grief
Interestingly, the emotional journey of change mirrors the stages of grief, as outlined in the Kubler-Ross model. Because, let’s be honest—change often feels like a loss. Loss of stability, predictability, or even identity. But here’s the good news: resilience can help us move through these stages with intention and growth.
1. Shock and Denial
“Wait, what? This can’t be happening.”
When change blindsides us—a sudden reorg, a new policy, or unexpected news—the first reaction is disbelief. Resilience here means grounding yourself, even when your mind is racing. It’s okay to pause, take a breath, and let the news sink in. Recognize that denial is a protective mechanism, but also a temporary stop on the journey.
2. Frustration and Depression
“Why is this happening? This isn’t fair.”
As reality sets in, emotions like frustration, sadness, or anxiety bubble up. This is often the toughest phase. Resilience doesn’t mean avoiding these feelings; it means allowing space to process them without getting stuck. Lean on support systems, talk it out, and remember that feeling low isn’t a failure—it’s part of the process.
3. Experimentation and Acceptance
“Okay, maybe this isn’t the end of the world.”
Once the emotional dust settles, curiosity creeps in. Resilience shines here through a willingness to try new things, explore possibilities, and adapt. It’s about shifting from “Why me?” to “What can I learn from this?” Small steps, experimentation, and flexibility become your superpowers.
4. Commitment and Growth
“I’ve got this.”
Over time, new routines form, confidence grows, and what once felt impossible becomes manageable. Resilience at this stage is about reflection: What did you learn? How have you grown? Celebrating these wins reinforces your ability to handle future changes with even greater strength.
Why Resilience Matters
Resilience isn’t about avoiding discomfort. It’s about moving through it, learning from it, and emerging stronger. Especially now, with constant shifts in how we work and live, resilience helps us:
- Handle Stress Without Burning Out: Acknowledging stress without letting it consume you.
- Adapt with Agility: Seeing change not as a threat, but as an opportunity.
- Sustain Performance: Staying engaged and productive, even when the ground feels shaky.
As we’ve said before, resilience is like a muscle—it strengthens with use. Focus on emotional intelligence: understanding your feelings, managing them effectively, and staying connected with others. Leaders can model resilience by being authentic about challenges, offering support, and creating environments where it’s okay to not have all the answers.
At the end of the day, resilience doesn’t mean you won’t get knocked down by change. It means you know how to get back up. And with every challenge, you’re not just surviving—you’re growing.
