What songs awaken and speak to your social consciousness?
In the EQ-i model, Social Responsibility is the ability and tendency to cooperate and contribute to the welfare of a larger social system, to have and act in accordance with a social consciousness and to show concern for the greater community. OKA’s Social Responsibility playlist would include the following songs for sure. Click the album cover or song title to hear the song.
What’s Going On, Marvin Gaye
In 1971, Marvin Gaye gave us a classic album (What’s Going On) full of wonderful, funky songs that pull us into a social consciousness. “Mercy, Mercy Me” is on the same album. This song, however, is my favorite. It reminds me to pay attention to the needs of those around me—to know and care about what’s going on.
Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?, Band Aid
Before “We Are the World” was released, generating over $63 million for African famine relief, this charity record blazed the trail. It reminds me to be grateful for my blessings but to remember those less fortunate and in need. What a great Christmas message–we are our brothers’ keepers.
Wake Up Everybody, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes
Wake up everybody—we have work to do. There are children to teach, sick people to care for and change to bring about.
The Way It Is, Bruce Hornsby
Take care of those less fortunate, and open your eyes and heart to social change. This was not a commonly heard message over the radio in the fall of 1985.
Another Day in Paradise, Phil Collins
After a string of catchy, pop hits, Phil Collins closes out the 1980s with this song that pulls our attention to the needy living right at our feet. It went on to win the Grammy for Record of the Year for 1990.
Superman Song, Crash Test Dummies
I love this beautiful, quirky song. Superman is not a hero because he can fly and bust through walls. He’s a hero because he sacrifices self to serve the community. This song’s Superman is the poster child of Social Responsibility.
