What model or tool do you use to achieve better team performance?
Team performance depends on a team’s inner dynamics and focus, but they are just as dependent on external factors and support. Effective teams need not only a clear purpose and goal, but a collectively held idea of how the group will achieve it’s appointed task. In addition, tight teams are made up of people who hopefully like and are personally connected to each other, but certainly team members must treat and communicate with each competently. Team performance requires many dynamic forces working at once, and they can be hard to keep track of and measure, and harder still to intentionally bring them about.
In recent years, OKA has increasingly drawn upon Impact International’s Team Performance model to support group diagnostics and serve as a management device for effective team building work as well.
Team Performance Model–The Domains
External Alignment represents the context in which a team operates. It establishes a common view of both the internal and external challenges that face a team and the organization around it. This domain reflects the team’s collective understanding of the expectations associated with its engagement with and service to internal and external stakeholders.
Unified Purpose represents why a team exists. This domain reflects the degree to which team members understand and then consciously and collectively act towards the same agreed goals and outcomes.
Quality Conversations are the ways in which team members communicate, particularly in terms of sharing and building on each other’s ideas. This domain reflect the degree to which team members act in good faith on behalf of team diversity, relationships, and a mutual respect for individual team members.
Effective Relationships reflect the trust, openness and honesty within the team –the attitudes and mindsets that underpin the ways in which team members relate to each other and the level of understanding and appreciation team members hold for one another.
Agreed Approach represents a team’s conscious recognition and collective ascent to established group processes like communication, problem solving, decision making, and generative thinking. This domain reflects team alignment regarding the way in which their work is to be done.
High Performance Mindset represents continuously curious teams focused on learning. This domain focuses on ensuring the evolution and improvement of the team and reflects team members’ mutual accountability to one another’s development and success.
The Team Performance Inventory (TPI)
Since 2013, OKA has been partnering with Impact International to translate their compelling Team Performance model into a team assessment tool. In 2017, Impact–in partnership with OKA–launched the TPI (Team Performance Inventory), a unique team diagnostic and development tool.
